Progress in West Germany

Overtime more and more progress in West Germany began to be more apparent.  One way was the slow acceptance into African American jazz and the quick acceptance of African American spirituals.  This acceptance allowed several black performers to perform in West Germany and continue to promote the civil rights movement in the US and the better treatment of blacks in West Germany.  African American GIs ended up being integrated with white GIs due to this and marriages between white women and African American GIs began to be more accepted.  This is a photo of Satchmo playing in Frankfurt, Germany during his tour.  Satchmo was there at the time to promote the State Department but also took the opportunity to promote civil rights in the United States.

Another sign of progress in West Germany was the contempt that West Germans had toward racism in the United States.  Many West Germans were weary of the promotion of American culture in the country and were aware that Americans were there to ensure that racism would not rise again in West Germany.  It was a hypocritical agenda in West German opinion according to this cartoon against US culture imperialism.
